WHAT IS IT?
Heel pain is discomfort in or around the heel bone (calcaneus) caused by stress on the tissues that support it. It can range from a dull ache to sharp, stabbing pain and may be felt at the bottom, back, or sides of the heel. Left untreated, many heel conditions worsen over time, leading to gait changes that cause knee, hip, and back problems.
COMMON CAUSES
Plantar fasciitis
Inflammation of the thick band of tissue connecting your heel to your toes; the #1 cause of heel pain
Achilles tendinitis
Overuse inflammation of the tendon at the back of the heel
Heel spurs
Bony calcium deposits that develop on the underside of the heel bone
Bursitis
Inflammation of the fluid-filled sac cushioning the heel
